About PhotoRestorationFree

Last updated · Written and tested by The PhotoRestorationFree team, who build and maintain this tool.

PhotoRestorationFree is built by a small team that makes focused, single-purpose web tools. We started this one after trying to restore a box of family photos and finding the same three problems everywhere: a required account, a subscription (sometimes billed weekly) for a handful of photos, and AI that made relatives look like strangers.

So we built a tool around three promises:

  • Faces stay true. We chose models that repair damage without repainting the person.
  • Your photos stay yours. Photos are processed in memory and never stored.
  • Fair prices. A free preview for everyone, $2.99 for one HD photo, or $9.99 a month for a whole album.

How we test

Before launch we ran damaged public-domain photos (a mid-1800s portrait and a glass-plate photo with peeling emulsion) through seven restoration, face and colorization models on fal.ai and compared them side by side for damage repair, faithfulness to faces, color realism, speed and cost. The pipeline on this site is the combination that won: Bria's restoration model for damage, Google's Nano Banana model for colorization, and CodeFormer for face enhancement and upscaling. We re-test when better models appear.
