AI photo restoration repairs old photos with neural networks instead of a retoucher's brush. It is fast and cheap, and for most family photos the result is good enough to print. But it isn't magic, and the differences between tools matter more than the marketing suggests.
AI vs human photo restoration
| AI (this site) | Human retoucher | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free preview; $2.99 per HD photo | $25 to $150+ per photo |
| Time | About 20 seconds | 1 to 3 days, longer for rush jobs |
| Scratches, dust, fading | Excellent | Excellent |
| Blurry faces | Good (HD face enhancement) | Good to excellent |
| Missing faces or large holes | A guess | Reconstructed from reference photos |
| Revisions | Run it again | Usually included |
| Privacy | Never stored | Depends on the studio |
What we learned testing AI restoration models
Before launching we ran the same two public-domain photos (a mid-1800s portrait and a badly damaged glass-plate photo) through seven models. Three lessons:
- "Restore" models that redraw the whole image can replace the person. One turned the 1800s portrait into a modern-looking man in costume. Beautiful, and wrong.
- Dust-and-scratch models are faithful but don't rebuild missing areas. Great for film scans, weak for torn prints.
- The best results come from a chain: damage repair first, optional colorization second, face enhancement and upscaling last. That is the pipeline this site uses.
When AI is the right choice
- You have a few dozen family photos to clean up for an album, slideshow or reunion.
- The damage is surface-level: scratches, dust, fading, small tears.
- You want to see what is possible before paying a professional.
When to pay a human
- A face is mostly missing or covered by a stain.
- The photo is evidence or a historical record that must not contain invented detail.
- You need a large print (16x20 and up) of a heavily damaged photo.
Start with the free preview above. If it isn't good enough, you have lost nothing. See fix old photos for damage-specific tips and pricing for HD options.
AI photo restoration: FAQ
Is AI photo restoration good?
For scratches, dust, fading and soft faces it is very good and takes seconds. It is weaker when large parts of a face are missing, because it has to invent them.
Does AI photo restoration change faces?
Some tools do: generative models can redraw a face so it looks sharper but less like the person. We picked models that keep facial features and only repair damage. Always compare before and after.
How much does professional photo restoration cost?
Human retouchers typically charge $25 to $150 per photo depending on damage, and $200 or more for severe reconstruction, with 1 to 3 days turnaround.
What is the best AI for restoring old photos?
It depends on the damage. In our tests, a dedicated restoration model was best for scratches and missing areas, a face model was best for blurry faces, and an instruction-following image model gave the most natural colorization. This site chains all three.
Is it safe to upload family photos to AI tools?
Check each tool's privacy policy. Some keep uploads or use them for training. We process photos in memory and never store them or the results. Our AI provider, fal.ai, processes each request under its own data policy.
